Moving Words - Readings from Women Writers
Wednesday 24 June
Curzon Hoxton, London
55 Pitfield St, London N1 6BU
Tickets Required
Moving Words is an intimate evening of live readings exploring the many ways women experience, interpret and navigate the world around them.
Hosted by Pruzan & Taking Space
Through personal essays, published work, journalistic pieces, poetry, research, fiction and reflections, our speakers will share work that examines movement in its broadest sense: through cities and landscapes, bodies and identities, sexuality, relationships, work, sport, memory and everyday life.
While this event centres women's voices and experiences, people of all genders are welcome to attend.
Pruzan is a women-led running brand exploring the intersections of movement, culture and storytelling. Taking Space is a feminist running practice and research platform investigating women's experiences of moving through public space. Together, we are interested in creating space for women's perspectives on movement, belonging and lived experience.

Event Origins
Moving Words was born over a coffee between Sarah Ackland and Jessie Hyman one cold, sunny morning in North London in February 2026. As the conversation drifted between books, running, research and everyday life, we found ourselves returning to the women whose words had shaped our thinking, challenged us, comforted us and changed how we moved through the world, and to how rarely those voices are given a platform to be heard together.
Moving Words is our attempt to create that space: an evening dedicated to women's stories, writing and perspectives, brought together in the same room.
Hosted by Pruzan and Taking Space, Moving Words brings together writers, academics, runners and creatives for an evening of stories, ideas and conversation.
About the Artwork
An audit by Art UK found that there are twice the number of statues of animals in London than there are statues of named women. For Moving Words, we drew inspiration from some of the women memorialized across the city.
Anna Pavlova
The celebrated Russian ballerina Anna Pavlova helped bring ballet to a global audience in the early twentieth century. Her gilded statue atop Victoria Palace Theatre commemorates her starring role in the theatre's opening season in 1911.
Noor Inayat Khan
A writer, musician and Special Operations Executive agent during the Second World War, Noor Inayat Khan became the first female wireless operator sent into occupied France. Her memorial in Gordon Square honours her extraordinary bravery and sacrifice in the fight against fascism.
Mary Seacole
A nurse, healer and entrepreneur, Mary Seacole cared for soldiers during the Crimean War and became renowned for her courage and compassion. Her statue at St Thomas' Hospital was the first public statue in the UK dedicated to a named Black woman.
Bronze Woman
Inspired by a poem by Guyanese-born poet and educator Cécile Nobrega, Bronze Woman was created to honour the contributions of Caribbean women and generations of women whose stories often go unrecorded. Unveiled in Stockwell in 2008 after a decade-long community campaign, it stands as a powerful symbol of recognition, memory and legacy.
Margaret MacDonald
A feminist, social reformer and advocate for women's political participation, Margaret MacDonald devoted much of her life to social change. Her memorial in Lincoln's Inn Fields depicts her surrounded by children and bears the inscription: "She spent her life in helping others."
Emmeline Pankhurst
Leader of the British suffragette movement, Emmeline Pankhurst played a pivotal role in the campaign for women's voting rights. Her statue stands near the Houses of Parliament, a reminder of the political change won through decades of activism.
